Greenspring Associates and GroupM Host Female Founders Forum

On May 17th, Greenspring Associates partnered with GroupM, the world’s largest advertising media company, to host the Female Founders Forum. The purpose of the event was to make customer and partnership introductions between female-led companies from Greenspring’s venture managers and GroupM agency leaders. At this event, founders from seven female-led startups backed by Greenspring venture managers such as Bessemer, Greycroft and Charles River Ventures met with agency representatives from leading corporations including LG, Dell, AT&T and Unilever. Before the one-on-one meetings, we were fortunate enough to have Kate Mitchell, co-founder and partner of Scale Venture Partners, give a keynote on current venture capital trends and the state of diversity in the startup industry.

“Seeing the magic of conversation between women who are building next generation
digital solutions for today’s marketing challenges was eye opening.”
Kate Mitchell, Partner and Co-Founder of Scale Venture Partners

The Female Founders Forum embodies one of Greenspring’s initiatives: to champion opportunities for women and under-represented minorities in the innovation economy. In addition to the benefits gained from a more inclusive technology focused workforce, it has become increasingly clear that diverse companies financially outperform their less diverse industry counterparts. Greenspring is committed to raising awareness of the importance of diversity within the technology community through participation in events such as this, as well as continued leadership on the National Venture Capital Association Diversity Taskforce, of which Greenspring’s founder, Ashton Newhall, is a co-chair.

“Research provides compelling evidence that diversity unlocks innovation and drives market growth.”
 Cary Tilds,
Chief Innovation Officer at GroupM

Announcing Digital Healthcare & University Showcase Technology Days

We are pleased to announce that Greenspring’s Portfolio Development program hosted a Digital Healthcare and University Showcase in Baltimore, Maryland on April 26th and 27th. The goal of the event was to bring together leading corporations, investors and startups from top research universities: Johns Hopkins University “JHU”, the University of Pennsylvania “UPENN” and the University of Virginia “UVA”. Over 200 entrepreneurs, university faculty, venture capitalists and corporate executives came together over the two days to discuss emerging opportunities within the healthcare and digital health space and facilitate deal introductions to venture capitalists and strategic corporates.

During the event 17 of the top companies from the three participating universities presented to more than 40 prominent healthcare investors including 5AM Ventures, OrbimedDomain Associates, Refactor Capital and Alta Partners, as well as 20 strategics including Amgen, DuPont, JABIL, Google and dRx (Qualcomm/Novartis joint venture). We believe company financings and strategic relationships will be formed as a result of this event.

The first day consisted of senior corporate executives participating in two different panels and two start-ups presentations. During these panels executives from such strategics as WellDoc, Merck, Google and Under Armour discussed new ways to better leverage digital health with patients and customers. The second day focused on introducing early stage drug development, medical device, healthcare IT and diagnostic dealflow from the three participating universities to an audience of top tier early stage investors. Additionally, a panel of neurology luminaries from the Lieber Institute, UVA and JHU was organized to discuss trends in the space and the challenges faced in bringing new treatments to patients.
